Simple to-do style lists have been a traditional method of tracking goals and tasks for decades. Take the below grocery list as an example. Each line represents a single task that must be completed, and no task is dependent on another. It doesn't matter if the milk or apples are grabbed first, as long as they both make it into the cart before checkout.

But what happens when the order of tasks does matter, where certain tasks are dependent on another task in the same list? One proposed solution implemented by other platforms is a nested list. The second example shows a nested list for the goal of starting a business. Although nested lists allow for more nuance than to-do lists, they still have several limitations. Let's say we also need to decide on our business structure and want to add the task to our list. This task needs to be completed before we can get a business license, and also before we raise capital. We could write this task out under both sections, however this is not ideal and can get out of hand very quickly. Things get even more disorganized when there are tasks added to the already duplicated task. All subtasks then also have to be duplicated, making a further mess of things.

As more dependencies are added, finding the relationship between any two tasks becomes increasingly unclear and time consuming.
